An arthritis drug currently deemed to be too expensive for patients in England and Wales has been approved for NHS use in Scotland.
Patients with rheumatoid arthritis who live north of the border will now have access to Tocilizumab after the Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC) decided to give the green light.
In a statement, the SMC said that the drug could be used to treat moderate to severe active rheumatoid arthritis when given in combination with another drug called methotrexate.
However, the therapy should only be administered when other treatment options have been exhausted.
Ailsa Bosworth, chief executive of the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society, told the BBC that the decision gives patients 'another chance of combating their disease'.
She added that she hopes the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence will revise its draft guidance for England and Wales so that people across the country have access to the drug. how to be a velvet bulldoser
